Obstacles To Keeping API Docs Up-To-Date

Lack of time is the biggest obstacle to keeping docs current

Limited time is the biggest obstacle preventing API providers from keeping their documentation up-to-date. Roughly two-thirds of the teams surveyed say their current workload hinders them from dedicating sufficient time to maintain API documentation (API Docs).

In their 2023 report — State of Software Quality — SmartBear identified limited time as the top obstacle (67%) preventing organizations from properly looking after their API Docs. Other notable roadblocks include the documentation being out of sync with the API (52%), follwed by a shortage of experinced staff (31%), and inadequate software tools (28%).
