The Society for Technical Communication (STC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that exists to serve its members. While that’s not the official refrain, it is the essence of why STC exists and the focus of a recently introduced effort known as “STC Transformation”.
STC Transformation seeks to map out a direction for STC that better addresses the changing face of the technical communication landscape. The STC Transformation website is a bountiful source of information about the types of changes being considered and is loaded with suggestions for improving the organization to better serve its members.
The Transformation team hopes to build a new roadmap for STC that will address issues including the redistribution of US content creation jobs to writers around the globe, the introduction of “commodity writing” (formulaic writing of traditional documentation deliverables), and the implications such trends have on STC membership (job loss, training needs, etc.). The effort also seeks to identify new ways the organization can add value to STC membership.
Because the Transformation Team created a virtual workspace using blogging software, site visitors can post comments, introduce new ideas, and share candid feedback (and they do!). You owe it to yourself to visit the site and participate in the discussions about the future direction of STC. Let STC leadership know what’s on your mind (that goes for you former members, too!). And, don’t forget to check out the comments left by the nearly 350 visitors that stop by the site each day.
