Website First Impressions in 50 Milliseconds Or Less

While it may only take a minute to fall in love, website visitors decide whether to bail from a website in 50 milliseconds or less. This startling statistic comes from research conducted by Gitte Lindgaard of Carleton University in Ottawa, published the journal Behaviour and Information Technology.

The researchers issued this advice to website designers:

  • Graphics should be strictly limited (a single eye-catching image may be best)
  • Company logos are best positioned in top left corner of any website targeting a Western audience
  • Most people expect to see a search function in the top right
