Creating usable indexes can be a difficult challenge, especially if you’re not an experienced indexer. The folks at Bright Path Solutions have made available a free white paper entitled Creating Usable Indexes: A Systematic Approach to Editing Indexes for Quality and Usability which outlines some common usability issues and will provide you with the knowledge necessary to spot index problems and repair them. By becoming familiar with a few basic guidelines, you can improve the overall quality and usability of the indexes you create.
According to the author, indexing guru Richard Evans, “You can tell a poorly designed index just by looking at one. The errors can be detected by examining the structure of the index and the entries contained within it. You don’t even need to reference the document to which the index belongs to locate the errors. Once you know what to look for, the problem areas are easy to spot and repair.”
