According to the results of a 2004 survey of 2,200 records managers, nearly half of American companies have yet to adopt a formal records retention policiy covering electronic documents, including email messages. Perhaps even more disturbing ... 46 percent of respondants admit they have no system in place to “hold” records (preventing them from being destroyed) during a pending litigation or a regulatory investigation, for instance.
